The Pfaffl Wien 2 wine is a fresh and elegant blend of Zweigelt and Pinot Noir from the Weinviertel region, in the north of Austria. A delicious combination of two red grapes that do so well in this part of Austria. From the Zweigelt we get sour cherry fruit character, a mineral backbone and some inky weight, while the Pinot Noir brings a sweeter strawberry fruit note, elegance of body and soft, lifted tannins. Sounds like a killer combination and it really is. After some of the wine spends a short time in used oak barriques, the finished product is quietly complex and perfectly balanced. Read More

For fans of a lighter bodied red with serious juiciness and a spicy edge, this is a great shout and we’re very thankful that Weinviertel remains largely under the radar. In this part of Austria, they have been blending grapes for wine for decades so its no wonder this bottle is so accomplished. The soft body and silky tannins are balanced beautifully by the bright acidity and attractive fruity core. This will pair excellently with game dishes, particularly venison, and it will go very well with dishes with a mushroom-y, earthy sauce.
Weinviertel is the wine region just to the North of Vienna and it is on the global wine map largely thanks to Roman Pfaffl and the Pfaffl winery. They make wines that are firmly rooted in Vienna’s long winemaking traditions where blends reign strong in both white and reds. The climate here lends itself to fresh, mineral expressions of native and international grapes and Pfaffl have some lovely examples from their sustainable 110 hectares of vineyards.
The Pfaffl winery was set up in 1976 by brothers Roman Pfaffl. Based in the Weinviertal region, just north of Vienna, Pfaffl are crediting with putting the Weinviertel region on the global wine map. Before the 70s, when Roman and his team set about reorganising their vineyards for quality wine production, Weinviertel was a place where wine was produced solely for local consumption
