Fragrant, freshly picked strawberries and ripe, juice-emitting raspberries greet you when you put the Johanneshof Reinisch Pinot Noir to the nose. Grown only in the best sites in their vineyards surrounding the village of Tattendorf, Johanneshof Reinisch make what is quite possibly the juiciest, fruitiest, most balanced Pinot Noir for under £20 anywhere in Austria. The wine spends 12 months in large oak barrels after fermentation which helps soften the wine and adds some of the delicate woody spice notes we sense, particularly on the nose. The palate is fresh yet savoury, light yet concentrated, juicy yet smooth – a real treat. A cracking wine for game, this would pair perfectly with roast veal or pheasant, or something earthy like a porcini mushroom pasta would be a treat.
Johanneshof Reinisch is a family run winery who work organically on 40 hectares of vineyards between Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf. The soils in this area are warmed by thermal spas running underground, allowing their grape varieties to thrive. They are ambassadors for Austria’s historic wine styles, and they cultivate a beautiful selection of whites and reds. Loved by sommeliers across the globe, seek their wines out for some expertly crafted wines at very fair prices!
40 km southeast of Vienna, we find the quaint and understated villages of Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf that have a surprising and long-standing winemaking history. It is here that we find the Familie Reinisch who, today, make some of Austria’s most accomplished and best value wines, including the eponymous Gumpoldskirchner.
