Harking from Puglia’s warm centre, here the Sangiovese grapes ripen beyond their usual red cherry flavours and give much darker, plum like expressions. Partnered with the Merlot, that adds freshness and a smooth body, this is a winning combination. This is one of the hallmark wines of the Caldora wine cooperative, based in Abruzzo who produce wines in some of Italy’s most classic styles all at amazing value. Their Ortonese Sangiovese Merlot spends two weeks on the skins and undergoes a fermentation at relatively warm temperatures, to extract the desired flavours and tannins from the skins. Over 700 growers contribute to the Caldora winery which helps them make consistently delicious wines, year after year.
With vineyards spanning across central and southern Italy, Ortonese produces delicious, everyday drinking wines that reflect the honest and respectful traditions of Italian winemaking. Ortonese is one of the labels of the famous, quality-driven cooperative, Caldora based in Ortona, Abruzzo. With over 700 producers growing grapes across over 1500 hectares of land, Ortonese wines are produced only from the best grapes and the depth of their production means that the wines are delicious year on year. Found on restaurant lists across the country, you’ll be hard pushed to find these traditional Italian wine styles at better prices.
