The Garnacha grapes for this wine come from two vineyards that sit high above the rest of the Rioja region, protected from weather fronts by the Sierra de Toloño, helping the grapes retain their hallmark freshness whilst developing juicy, spicy berry character. After fermentation in cement tanks, the wine ages for 12 months in a concrete egg, winemaker Carlos believes this is the best vessel for preserving mineral character. After one year of settling, the wine is released in perfect balance. An avoidance of oak allows for the perfect marriage of fruitiness, floral notes, spicy undertones, and a mineral finish.
Creaciones Exeo is an exciting winery based in Rioja Alavesa. Current owner and winemaking Carlos is the third generation in his family to cultivate local grape varieties on their 24 Hectare estate. Adopting a firmly sustainable approach to winemaking, Creaciones Exeo take great care in respecting the land they work on, avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical interventions wherever possible. In recent years, the winery has turned away from the traditional winemaking techniques of the Rioja region, preferring unoaked expressions of their wines, allowing the varieties to sing without shadow. Thank you, new wave Rioja and Creaciones Exeo for this cracking drop.
Rioja is Spain’s leading wine region, world famous for their bold wines, rich in flavour, smooth oak and undisputable age worthiness. Tempranillo is the dominant grape here, with Garnacha (otherwise known as Grenache) typically used in the blends, in addition to other sub varieties such as Graciano. There are three growing zones in which it is split into: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Along with Priorat it is the only region to have gained DOCa status, in recognition of thier distinctive terroir and the quality wines they produce.
