Centopassi farms 94 hectares of confiscated mafia land in the West of Sicily, close to Palermo. A brave cause which offers a mafia-free environment, where locals can work legally, away from corruption and have access to health and welfare benefits. Giato is the district where these wines are from, they represent Centopassi's best blends from solely local grapes, in this case a blend of 70% Nero d’Avola and 30% Perricone. Their vineyards are cultivated according to organic practices, for which they are certified. All grapes are hand-harvested as a quality assurance and to protect the fruit. After transporting to the cooperative, the grapes are de-stemmed and then macerated for a short period pre-fermentation. The wine is fermented and matured in stainless steel for a further 5 months before bottling.
We have worked with Centopassi for many years proudly representing this cause, but first and foremost their incredible wines. Centopassi Nero d'Avola Perricone Giato Rosso is fresh, vibrant and very very easy drinking! This organic Italian Nero d'Avola blend is a cracking wine to go with pizza or all kinds of pasta dishes, featuring tomatoes sauces, red meats, sardines, salami and so on.
Centopassi is a social cooperative which is part of the Libera Terra movement, who work with confiscated mafia land, making lawful work for locals with better pay and benefits such as health care and pensions, whilst rejuvenating the land into sustainable agriculture and most importantly a corruption free environment. Named after a true story, turned film based on a political activist who opposed the Sicilian Mafia, ‘I Cento Passi’ means 100 steps, it represents the distance between protagonist Peppino Impastato and that of the house of renowned mafia boss Tano Badalamenti.
