Centopassi Nerello Mascalese Nocera Pietre a Purtedda da Ginestra Rosso (quite a mouthful, we tend to just call it Purtedda!) is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese grapes, picked from their organically farmed Portella della Ginestra vineyard. An isolated single plot, at an astonishing high altitude of around 950 (!) meters above sea level. The Nerello Mascalese grapes are hand-harvested and upon arrival at the winery de-stemmed. A short maceration of around 12 days extracts the desire, delicated flavours and fermentation itakes place in stainless steel tanks. The resulting wine is matured in a combination of used and new oak for 18 months, giving the wine a round texture and adding some subtle spice notes, this is followed by six months in bottle before release.
This organic Italian Nerello Mascalese wine goes brilliantly with grilled red meats or stews and vegetarian dishes based around wild mushrooms or smoky aubergine.
Centopassi is a social cooperative which is part of the Libera Terra movement, who work with confiscated mafia land, making lawful work for locals with better pay and benefits such as health care and pensions, whilst rejuvenating the land into sustainable agriculture and most importantly a corruption free environment. Named after a true story, turned film based on a political activist who opposed the Sicilian Mafia, ‘I Cento Passi’ means 100 steps, it represents the distance between protagonist Peppino Impastato and that of the house of renowned mafia boss Tano Badalamenti.
