Centopassi is a social cooperative who work with 94 hectares of vineyard land that has been reclaimed from the mafia. Located in the West of Sicily, close to Palermo, this is an incredibly noble cause which offers locals legal work and access to health and welfare benefits in a mafia-free environment. The district of Giato, from which these wines are named, is based around an ancient Greek theatre on top of Mount Jato. From here you can oversee the core of the Centopassi vineyards, and you can feel the vast history of this beautiful land. Only local Sicilian grapes are used in the Giato blends, in this example Grillo at 60% and Catarratto at 40% of the blend. All their vineyards are certified organic and harvested manually to ensure only the best quality fruit is used. The grapes are gently pressed, then the must (unfermented grape juice) is transferred to stainless steel where it ferments and matures for 5 months before bottling.
Centopassi has always had a soft spot in our hearts and their wines just keep getting better and better. Centopassi Grillo Catarratto Giato Bianco is a very enjoyable wine with floral notes developing into stone fruits and grapefruit. This organic Italian Grillo Catarratto blend is an excellent pairing for seafood such freshly grilled prawns or calamari and also vegetarian dishes or sides featuring spring veg such as asparagus, courgettes, peas.
Centopassi is a social cooperative which is part of the Libera Terra movement, who work with confiscated mafia land, making lawful work for locals with better pay and benefits such as health care and pensions, whilst rejuvenating the land into sustainable agriculture and most importantly a corruption free environment. Named after a true story, turned film based on a political activist who opposed the Sicilian Mafia, ‘I Cento Passi’ means 100 steps, it represents the distance between protagonist Peppino Impastato and that of the house of renowned mafia boss Tano Badalamenti.
