Ripe, exotic, weighty and balanced, the relatively unknown Falanghina grape has garnered many fans in the UK in recent years for its curious complexion and brilliant price point. Campania is known across Italy for the calibre of its white wines, and, in recent years, thanks to a handful of quality driven young producers in the region, its fame is increasing around the world. Not least in the UK, where we see Fianos, Grecos and Falanghinas popping up on some of the best restaurant lists around. The problem with Campania is that it is difficult to produce excellent wines, the climate is warm and the best vineyard sites at altitude are expensive. This is why Lapilli are such a great fit for us, family-run since the 1960s they produce exquisite, pure and elegant whites from this esteemed region at a price point that makes them incredibly accessible. This 2019 Lapilli Falanghina, like their other whites, isn’t manipulated much in the winery, after a cold fermentation, the wine is left on the lees for a few months in stainless steel before being bottles and released.
Campania is home to some of Italy’s finest whites, this is without question. Rare is it, though, that you encounter a producer making regionally typical, complex and concentrated examples of these esteemed white grapes at incredibly attractive prices! It’s for that reason that we are always chuffed talking about the wines of the family-run Lapilli winery based in the Avellino province. The Lapilli family has been producing wine here since the 1960s and today, they produce under the watchful eye of consultant winemaker Marco Flacco who is well-known for his ability to produce elegant and regionally specific wines.
