Campania is home to some of Italy’s finest whites, this is without question. Rare is it, though, that you encounter a producer making regionally typical, complex and concentrated examples of these esteemed white grapes at incredibly attractive prices! It’s for that reason that we are always chuffed talking about the wines of the family-run Lapilli winery based in the Avellino province. The Lapilli estate is fortunate to have vineyards in some of the best-exposed villages in the province, including Tufo (home of Greco) and Benevento (home of Falanghina) and here, the vineyards are situated at between 250 – 500m above sea level. The Lapilli Falanghina is made from grapes found at the lower end, with a higher clay component, helping for the slow development of the ripe apricot and banana flavours. The Fiano vineyards are found in the middle of this range, with a mixture of clay and limestone soils which add a mineral undertone to the aromatic, stone fruit character of the Fiano grape. The grapes for the Lapilli Greco di Tufo come from the highest and poorest soils in the area, it is here that the Greco grape thrives. Concentrated, mineral, elegant and quietly expressive, it’s a special white that has fans amongst wine drinkers across the world and it's always a pleasure to open a bottle. Lapilli produces enticing white wines in a region that sometimes prices out everyday drinkers, the defining style across the range is elegance but never to the detriment of varietal expression and purity.
