Tucked into the picture‑perfect Mosel village of Erden, Dr Hermann is a family‑run estate doing brilliant things with a focus on one grape: Riesling. Today it’s run by husband‑and‑wife team Christian and Julia Hermann, but the roots go back to 1967, when Christian’s grandfather – Dr Hermann himself – set up the estate using some very special vineyard parcels he gained in the division of a previous winery project he was involved in.

Those vineyards are the real story here. Steep, dramatic slopes of classic Mosel slate – blue, grey, and even rare red slate – producing Rieslings and small parcels of Pinot Noir, of incredible purity and tension. More than 80% of the estate’s holdings sit in top‑tier sites (the highest classification in Germany), and many of the vines are seriously old – some over 130 years. Everything is hand‑harvested, carefully selected berry by berry, and entirely estate‑grown.

In the cellar, Christian keeps things very minimal. Native yeasts, wild fermentations, and traditional large oak casks allow the wines to speak clearly of where they’re from. The result? Cool‑climate wines with precision, energy and real sense of place – elegant rather than showy, but deeply expressive.

A rising star of the Mosel, Dr Hermann officially joined Germany’s elite VDP growers in 2025 – a big nod to the estate’s quality and direction. For us, these are exactly the kinds of wines we love: quietly confident, beautifully made, and utterly compelling once you’ve pulled the cork.
