There’s no drink more capable of bringing summer to English pastures (or pavements) than an Aperitivo Spritz. How apt, then, that the roots of this spirit-lifter lie more in obscuring flavours (read ‘weather’...), than celebrating them?
The spritz’s origin varies depending on where you are. In mid-19th century Venice, then part of the Austrian empire, the spritz was born from the Austrian soldiers’ distaste for local wines. They added soda water to punch up their acidity, with the word ‘spritz’ deriving from the German spritzer – to spray. In wealthier north Italian cities like Milan and Turin a spritz was enjoyed as part of their embedded aperitivo culture, with prosecco and an orange slice replacing the white wine of Venice.
Either way, we think spritz is here to stay – but, as ever, we are here to up the stakes. We import what we consider to be the best Aperitivo around. Stemming from the Piemonte region, its produced by the Antica Distilleria Quaglia under their Berto line. This vibrant liqueur is created by infusing distilled spirit with botanicals of fresh orange peel, gentian root and rhubarb. Such attention to detail and unparalleled respect for ingredients makes for flavours that should certainly be celebrated – and which are perfect for any celebration. Its palate is as captivating as its colour – bright, young and beautifully bittersweet with hints of ginger and Italian citrus fruit. Made from all-natural ingredients and concocted without a chemical in sight, it’s just as beautiful enjoyed with or without prosecco.
Forget bringing summer to English pastures, this is the cheapest flight to Florence you’ll ever buy – and with no need to quarantine you can happily share the experience with 18 servings included (we’ll be patiently awaiting your invitation).
