Rotgipfler is a grape variety only really found in the Thermenregion, just south of Vienna. It ripens later than Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s more famous white grapes, and this makes it well suited to the climate in Thermenregion which is warmed by the thermal spas that run under the soil. Aromatic, ripe yet always fresh, this Rotgipfler is a wine drinker’s wine that has a steely mineral edge, similar to that acquired by some of France’s most esteemed whites. The palate is packed with flavours that open up in the glass, in fact we think this would age pretty nicely over the next 3-5 years too. We’ll forgive you for not having tasted one before, and you’ll thank us once you’ve tasted.
The aromatic profile of this wine paired with the medium body and mouth-watering finish make it a great accompaniment to spicy foods. Try it with Pad Thai or even a sweet and sour dish!
Johanneshoef Reinisch is an organic, family run winery in Austria’s Thermenregion. Austria is a fantastic place to find world class wines at undiscovered prices and Johanneshof Reinisch is one of the reasons we love this Alpine nation. Their whites offer true, precise, and concentrated expressions and the reds are fruit-forward, balanced and savoury. Austrian Rotgipfler wine should be your next find.
40 km southeast of Vienna, we find the quaint and understated villages of Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf that have a surprising and long-standing winemaking history. It is here that we find the Familie Reinisch who, today, make some of Austria’s most accomplished and best value wines, including the eponymous Gumpoldskirchner.
