There aren't many red grapes that thrive in the mountainous far reaches of where grapes can be grown. One such grape, though, is Lagrein, found almost exclusively in the Alpine corners of Italy, Austria, and Germany and when done well it can be magical. From the expert wine-makers at the Cantina Andriano cooperative in Alto-Adige, we have this Lagrein 'Rubeno' which showcases all of Lagrein's charm. Medium bodied with an Alpine freshness accompanied by a stony minerality and earthy undertones, inky in colour but lighter on its feet than you might expect. Bramble fruits hop out of the glass here, with notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, raspberries and black cherry, and underneath hot rocks play with a subtle smokiness. There are floral notes too, with hints of dried rose petals peaking out. The palate is bright and fresh with gentle tannins, a silky finish and the acidity so lifting that this is a joy to pair with food. From Alpine vineyards in Alto Adige, Northern Italy. Garnet red with violet hues, the Rubeno displays delicious berry aromas on the nose with nuances of violets and dried and fresh flowers. Read More

Produced in the Gries area, just outside of Bolzano, on the slopes of the Adige River, the Lagrein grapes grow in vineyards of at altitude of 250 meters above sea level. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, this Lagrein spends six months in large oak casks, which helps to soften the profile of the wine, making it extra smooth in the bottle. The social cooperative Cantina Andriano has been producing wine in this region for decades. The winery is joint owned by its 50+ growers who contribute to and share in the winery's successes. They make precise wines that speak clearly of their mountainous vitivulture, with fresh fruits and vibrant acidity across their range.
With its earth and mineral character, this Lagrein Ruben will pair well with game, veal and lamb dishes. Mature hard cheeses would work really well with this wine too!
In a wine region steeped in history, you know you’re onto something special when you encounter the oldest, the first of its kinds. Cantina Andriano (or Kellerei Andrian), founded in 1893, is the oldest cooperative of winemakers in Alto-Adige, an area which, more than most, is dominated by social cooperatives. Today Cantina Andriano produces fresh, fruity, and mineral white wines with elegance and complexity in their youth that make them fantastic value for money.
