Sabbino Loffredo, the owner of Pietracupa, has become synonymous with quality in Campania. He is looked to for benchmark and boundary pushing Greco, Fiano and Taurasi on his modest, 8-hectare estate where he works tirelessly to product some phenomenal wines. These are wines of precision, elegance and absolute quality that should be tried by all wine fans. Fiano is southern Italy’s most widely planted white grape and it succeeds in the warmer climate of the Mezzogiorno thanks to its ability to retain acidity long into the ripening season, so the pronounced stone and exotic fruit notes are balanced by a wonderful freshness. Nowhere is the expression of Fiano more accomplished than around the town of Avellino in Campania, and few produce a more expressive, mineral and balanced example than Pietracupa. On the nose there is a beautiful combination of clear floral notes, jasmine and orange blossom, with ripe green apple and apricots all alongside and a steeliness is calling you to taste. The palate is concentrated and textured, with weaving flavours of sage, honeyed lemon, peach skin and steel, with Pietracupa’s hallmark soaring acidity that lingers for what feels like hours. Pair this with grilled squid or baked sea bream, or fritto misto or pork chop – delicious. Read More

Sabino Loffredo took over his father’s vineyards in the early 2000s after travelling and studying winemaking in some of Central Europe’s most esteemed white wineries. He has studied his beautiful land in the Avellino province of Campania and takes full advantage of what are some of the highest vineyards in the area. The volcanic soils impart the beautiful wet stone character onto the backbone of this wine and thanks to the slow, cold fermentations in Pietracupa’s winery, all the delicate aromatics of this 100% Fiano wine are preserved and, if you have the patience, will so gracefully.
Greco and Fiano: if you’re a fan of either of these stunning, Campanian white wines, there’s a good chance you don’t need an introduction to the Pietracupa winery or its owner Sabbino Loffredo. Pietracupa is a leading example of how small producers can produce world-class wines that are truly representative of their origins. Determined, charismatic and softly spoken, Sabbino Loffredo took over his father’s wine estate in the early 2000s and has taken it to heights unreached by any other Campanian winemaker. After a string of young winemaker awards received early in his career, today, Sabbino is widely regarded as making the finest, most aromatically pure white wines in Campania, despite remaining small and distinctly independent. Pietracupa cultivates eight hectares of vines and produces around 50,000 bottles per year. Wine drinkers all over the world should have Pietracupa firmly on their map, these wines are not to be missed.
