A far cry from the boring Pinot Grigio's that feature on so many wine lists across the country, this small production PG from the Russolo family has poise, elegance, and a fruit expression that'll have you turning your head. Pear, lime zest, and white peach notes flanked by dusty chalk, dried green herbs and a zingy, refreshing finish.
Rino and Iginio Russolo took over from their father in the early 2000s, and today they cultivate local and international grape varieties on the famously gravelly soils in Friuli Grave, a large appellation in the West of the region. This Pinot Grigio is one of our favourites of theirs, it showcases why Pinot Grigio can be a serious, expressive and elegant white wine. There is beautiful tension between the ripe citrus and orchard fruits and the bright acidity alongside the chalky mineral backbone. The fruit is firm but not overripe which make this a great pair for light, white fish dishes.
Friuli is a corner of Europe whose white wine production rivals any European region. Their history and dedication to single varietal and blended white wines is exemplified by the sheer number of small producers making well-priced, regionally typical, and frankly delicious wines. We love discovering new producers and we're pretty sure you're going to be fans of Russolo too!
The Russolo family has been flying the flag for delicious, varietally distinctive, small production wines in Friuli Grave since the 1970s, and today, they're producing what we think to be some of the best single varietal wines in the entire region. Rino Russolo and his brother Iginio have recently taken over this 17Ha estate from their father, and they have a new found focus on sustainability and environmental conscientiousness. As a result, their low-yielding, highly expressive wines have never tasted better and you can find amazing value for money across their range of wines. A current favourite of ours is their white blend Doi Raps, meaning two bunches, referring to the fact that only two grape bunches are left on the vine during ripening. Reducing competition for nutrients means the remaining grapes ripen with so much intensity of flavour and the wine is packed with lychee, peach and mandarin flavours that are just delicious.
