Folli and Benato is a wine project set up by two, long-standing partners in the European wine industry. Careers that extend beyond fifty years in wine has led this dynamic duo to venture down the exciting path of selecting and bottling some of the best wines northern Italy has to offer. Driven by a passion for indigenous Italian wines, Folli & Benato have made it their mission to scour Italian regions to find small producers who are making amazing liquid that is truly representative of its region and punches above its weight.
Their first foray lands them in Piedmont and in Gavi. Sensing that the Europe is awash with Gavi that is below the standard that the humble Cortese grape can achieve, Folli & Benato have worked closely with a small producer to craft two delicious, concentrated and unusually characterful Gavi wines. The first, a Gavi from the broader growing area which is packed with lemon balm, white peach and honeysuckle character, with freshness and a delicately mineral backbone. As good an introduction to the region as you will find! The second, a Gavi del Comune di Gavi (or Gavi di Gavi for short) which comes from the historic centre of the appellation. This smaller production wine is one of the best Gavi examples we have ever tasted. It's got white fruits, orchard fruits, yellow fruits and bundles of floral character, but to back this up there is beautiful tension and structure with a prevailing steeliness that is hard to come by in Gavi. This mineral quality opens it up to a host of beautiful food pairings, none less than shellfish.
Folli & Benato have packaged these wines in bottles worthy of their charismatic personas, with artistic labels inspired by the work of modernist artist Bruno Munari and his iconically Italian hand gesture. Grazie Folli & Benato, vi ringraziamo per questi vini deliziosi!
