Luscious yet lifted, this opens with ripe apricot, baked apple and honeyed citrus, edged with a delicate note of orange peel and gentle spice. This is Rotgipfler in dessert mode—rare, characterful, and unmistakably Austrian. You’re already in niche territory: one of the country’s indigenous grapes, shaped here into a beautifully balanced Auslese. Sweet, yes, but not heavy. There’s a bright line of acidity cutting through the richness, giving the wine poise and freshness, while the texture stays silky and precise rather than opulent. A lovely alternative to the usual sweet wine suspects. think less botrytis bomb, more orchard fruit purity with a subtle Alpine twist.
40 km southeast of Vienna, we find the quaint and understated villages of Gumpoldskirchen and Tattendorf that have a surprising and long-standing winemaking history. It is here that we find the Familie Reinisch who, today, make some of Austria’s most accomplished and best value wines, including the eponymous Gumpoldskirchner.
