About this Genever

This Old Genever is a softly malted spirit and a cracking introduction to this Dutch category with a super interesting history (did you know Genever is the mother of Gin?!). A pale gold colour, the nose sets you off with spicy, light malty aromas with hints of juniper, anise, citrus peel, cloves, cinnamon and orange flowers. These aromas are reflected on the palate which is complex, spicy, malty and balanced.

In order to make this curious spirit, By The Duch distill a blend of malt, corn, and rye in a process that is similar to the beginnings of Whisky. Then, in a further distillation, botanicals such as lemon and orange peel, coriander seeds, star-anise, and liquorice are added, so that their flavours delicately infuse with the malted base. More malt wine infused with juniper berries is added and diluted to the perfect balanced spirit.

Despite the Brits failing to recreate Genever and inventing Gin as a result, the aromas in this By The Dutch Old Genever are more reminiscent of whiskey than gin, so refrain from using this to mix a Vesper or a Gin & Tonic! Mix with soda and a slice of lemon to get a feel for these rich and spicy spirit, then try mixing a sour or even a Negroni Sbagliato!.
