Piedmontese red wines made from a blend of varieties rarely come as delicious as this. Pinot Noir with Nebbiolo? Sounds strange, that light, refreshing, silk-like red, paired with a similarly lifted but far more potent, tannic Italian cousin. It wouldn't have been our first pick to partner either, but like Beetroot and Smoked Mackerel, for some reason, they just work. Refreshing yet concentrated notes of ripe strawberries, cranberries and blood orange are joined by a meaty-ness and slight earthy character that are very welcomed. Produced naturally, with minimal intervention and low-sulphur by rising star wine-maker Gian Luca Colombo, this is a bottle to impress your friends with. Gian Luca has spent the past 10 years consulting on some of Piedmont's top wines. In the last three years, he has acquired a tiny plot of land and begun releasing wines under his own name. He takes a minimal intervention approach to all of his wines, believing that beautiful grapes need very little to speak clearly of their place of origin.
Have you ever heard of singers Darlene Love or Merry Clayton? No? Well, you’ve probably never heard of Piedmontese winemaker Gian Luca Colombo either. Just as we wouldn’t love Stevie Wonder, David Bowie and the Rolling Stones’ best hits without the accompanying vocals of Darlene and Merry, we wouldn’t have the pleasure of drinking some of Barolo’s finest wines without the input and consultancy of Gian Luca Colombo. Despite his relative youth, the humble Gian Luca Colombo has spent most of his professional life as a consultant winemaker for some of the Langhe’s top producers. With each winery came a different challenge but Gian Luca’s one unwavering constant is the absolute importance of listening to the land, to nature, and to the grapes on the vine.
