From the Barbaresco region in Piedmont, the Rocca family has been cultivating Nebbiolo for over a century and rarely do we find bottles of 100% Nebbiolo that are as juicy and approachable as this. Nebbiolo is known for its high acidity, high tannic profile that can be tough when young, it often needs time in oak and time in bottle before it 'comes around' aka becomes pleasantly drinkable. Not here though! In safe and caring hands of Monica Rocca and family, this Nebbiolo Rosso di Rocca is juicy, fruity, smooth and inviting with loads of characteristic Nebbbiolo fruit character, without the prickly bits. There is a touch of Cabernet Franc in this wine, which probably helps a little with the softening. Notes of juicy strawberries, black berries, and cherries are joined by violet and rose inflexions. The palate is warm and round, with mouth-watering acidity and a seamless, smooth finish. Thank you family Rocca for delivering an enjoyable, playful Nebbiolo that we can enjoy without delay! The Rocca family are a small operation in the Barbaresco area. Most of their production is focussed on Barbaresco wine itself, for which they have a great name and their top wines are incredible. For this Rosso di Rocca wine, the family pick grapes from the small town Magliano Alfieri, where the vineyards have a southwest exposure and sit between 250 to 310 meters above sea level, helping retain freshness and the floral profile of the wine. Only fermenting and ageing in stainless steel to preserve the delicate fruit character, this wine is bottled in the summer after the harvest.
A delicious young Nebbiolo that is vibrant and fresh and would pair perfectly with a rack of lamb.
The story of the Albino Rocca winery is one shaped by tradition and a great care for the Piemonte terroir in which its based. Born out of the 1940s, when Giacomo, father of the eponymous Albino, began selling grapes from family vineyards, later making his own wine in small quantities, family tradition has forever shaped. In the 1960s Albino inherited the winery, combining hard work and familial support to lay the foundation for a business that’s grown internationally over the years, since its first production of Barbaresco in 1971. Its wines – largely Barbaresco made from Nebbiolo, alongside wines from Dolcetto, Barbera, Cortese, Chardonnay and Moscato – have continued to evolve in quality over four generations, using grapes harvested from four crus that cover 18 hectares in total.
