About the wine

Benanti can be thanked in part for Etna's growing status on the international wine stage. They have been growing grapes for quality wine production since the '70s. Nerello Mascalese, the dominant red grape on Etna, is an intriguing one. Light in colour yet concentrated with red fruit flavours, firm acidity and great age-worthiness. This single vineyard Etna Rosso gives dark cranberry, blood orange, dark cherry and mineral notes with a brightness that makes it deliciously moreish. There is an elegant power to great Nerello Mascalese wines that is remiscent of great Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo and these top Etna reds are worth seeking out before everyone finds out about them!

From a high-altitude vineyard on the south western slope of Etna, the Nerello Mascalese grapes thrive in this mountainous climate, on sandy volcanic soils. The Benanti Etna Rosso Contrada Cavaliere is made from a specific single vineyard site in which the vines are over 50 years old. With the utmost care they hand harvest the grapes and transport them to the cellar, and the work in the winery is done with great care to preserve the beautiful aromatics of the Nerello grapes. The grapes are de-stemmed and fermented in stainless steel using indigenous yeasts, after which the matures in French oak barrels for 12 months, helping the wine to settle, the fruit to develop, and the tannins to softem. Little flavour has been imparted by the fruit, but its presence aids in the poise of the final bottle.
