From one of Tuscany’s leading, most historically important estates, Castello di Ama is located in a small village in the historic heart of Chianti Classico, in central Tuscany, between the Florence and Siena. This is a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot and Malvasia Nera. Harvest is carried out by hand towards the end of August. Each grape variety is vinified separately using native yeasts, in steel tanks at controlled temperature. The wine is then transferred into barriques for malolactic fermentation. Blending of the three grape varieties takes place at the end of the malolactic fermentation. Afterwards the wine is transferred into oak barrique for approximately 12 months of maturation.
The world-famous Chianti producer Castello di Ama is steeped in history, but this hasn’t stopped it from pushing the boundaries forward in one of Italy’s most important wine-growing areas. It was in the 1970s that the Castle (Castello) in the small hamlet of Ama, in the subregion of Gaiole in Chianti, that life was breathed back into an ancient estate. A replanting of vineyards by four ambitious families, saw the beginning of a dazzling new chapter for Castello di Ama.
