Barbera, famous for its juicy and enticing red and black berry character, natural acidity and savoury, food friendly tones, is rarely displayed as honestly and purely as in this Barbera d’Asti Solo Acciaio from Montalbera. Too often we taste Barbera that spends some time maturing in oak barrels. Here, Montalbera use ‘solo acciaio’ or 'only steel', allowing us to appreciate their Piedmontese Barbera in all of its naked glory! Red plums, blackberry and juicy black cherry jam are all at play here, with an earthy undertone that appears alongside a fresh spice note on the finish. There is a roundness and juiciness to this Barbera that makes it such good value. The palate is plush and supple with a lifted fruit character and a velvety finish. Delicious with a tomato pasta or grilled red meat. Read More

Montalbera harvest slightly overripe grapes here, a practice only possible due of the natural acidity in the Barbera grapes. This ripeness presents itself as juicy, sweet fruit notes in the glass and makes the wine juicy and delicious. After 10 days on the skins, the wine spends 6-8 months in stainless steel allowing it to settle and balance, before bottling.
Located in the Asti province of Piedmont, in northwest Italy, Montalbera is the most important producer in the Monferrato area, making a name for themselves worldwide for their production of the rare Ruchè grape. A family run winery, they promise to allow their native grape varieties to shine in every glass through the avoidance of excessive interference.
If you’ve encountered the beguiling Ruchè grape variety in your wine journey to date, then you have probably come across the Montalbera winery based in Monferrato, Piedmont. If you haven’t then welcome, we’re excited for you to try this alluring red wine. Around these rolling hills in the Asti province of Piedmont, Enrico’s Morrando’s family cultivate this incredibly rare and unique grape, Ruché. It is only found growing around the eight villages in this tiny area, where most of the agriculture is dedicated to the noble hazelnut (the Nutella factory is a matter of miles away!). Montalbera strive to allow their indigenous grape varieties to speak for themselves, doing little in the winery to mask the raw characteristics of their wonderful grapes.
