A dry wine with a warm, broad structure and persistent and long finish. Organic producer, Elena Fucci has 6 hectares of Aglianico vines, which surround her family home, as part of Contrada Solagna of Titolo at the foot of Mount Vulture in Basilicata. This unique, fertile land is made up of volcanic soils, rich in minerals, which makes for ideal conditions for growing quality Aglianico.
The Fucci family vines range between 50 and 70 years old, some of the oldest in the area. The Aglianico grapes are harvested in small baskets and taken to the cellar for selection. Whole bunch fermentation in stainless steel tanks. Maceration of around 14/15 days. After, the wine is drawn off and the remainder is softly pressed. Malolactic fermentation occurs in barriques of 200 litres (50% new, 50% used) for a total of 12 months. Additional ageing takes place in bottles for 12 more months before release.
Elena Fucci is a name that is synonymous with winemaking in Basilicata and today, Elena, along with her eponymous winery, is one of the greatest ambassadors of this often-forgotten region. Elena Fucci, now in her forties, cultivates grapes on six hectares of her family’s land and produces wines exclusively within the appellation of Aglianico del Vulture. Her Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is considered by many to be the best red wine in southern Italy - it offers dark berries, leather, fresh spice, a brooding charm and serious ageability. Organic certified, minimal intervention, and absolutely committed to sustainability, in 2000, Salvatore Fucci, was about to sell his family’s land when his daughter Elena convinced him to keep it, promising to maximise its potential after studying Oenology. Aren’t we thankful it worked! Through her dedication to the land and tireless study of the Aglianico grape, Elena Fucci tames this difficult variety into wines of clarity, minerality, complexity and finesse.
